How to Grow Mini Potato Tubers in a Pot.

How to Grow Mini Potato Tubers in a Pot

What You’ll Need

  • Mini potato tubers (whole, uncut)
  • Large pot (at least 12–16 inches deep, 15–20 gallons) with drainage holes
  • Potting mix (light and well-draining)
  • Compost or balanced fertilizer

Step 1: Prepare the pot

  1. Make sure your pot has drainage holes.
  2. Fill the bottom 6–8 inches with potting mix.

Step 2: Plant the tubers

  1. Place the mini tubers on the soil surface, eyes facing up. Space 4-6 inches apart.
  2. Cover with 3–4 inches of soil.

Tip: Don’t bury them too deep—more soil will be added as the plants grow.

Step 3: Water

  • Water gently to moisten the soil.
  • Keep the soil consistently damp but not soggy.

Step 4: Add soil as plants grow (“hilling”)

  1. When shoots reach 6–8 inches tall, add 3–4 more inches of soil, leaving the tips exposed.
  2. Repeat until the pot is nearly full.

Step 5: Care during the season

  • Place the pot in full sun (6–8 hours/day).
  • Water regularly to keep soil evenly moist.
  • Fertilize lightly if your potting mix doesn’t already contain compost.

Step 6: Harvest

  • For baby potatoes, harvest when plants flower.
  • For full-size potatoes, wait until the foliage dies back.
  • Carefully dig or tip out the pot to collect your tubers.
