What is a bedding plant?

In the garden a bedding plant is a plant that blooms for most of the season.  It provides lasting color for the year. It is usually an annual flower such as Zinnia and Marigolds, However they are a few long lasting perennials that are considered bedding plants such as, Echinacea, Rudbeckia and Lavender.
