What Vegetables can take extreme heat?


These are the vegetables that are the most heat tolerant:


  • Snap Beans (greenbeans) most can        only take moderate heat
    • Desperado, Provider , Contender, Lazy Housewife, Seychelles
  • Southern Peas (like black-eyed peas, cowpeas) – Built for heat and drought.
    • California Blackeye No. 5, Phenomenal
  • Eggplant– Big fan of long, hot summers (needs warm nights too).
    •  Black Beauty, Rosa Bianca
  • Hot Peppers– Hot peppers especially (like jalapeños and habaneros) thrive in high temps.
    • Jalapeno M, Early Jalapeno, Anaheim, Habanero, Hungarian Wax, Poblano
  • Sweet Peppers: Mulch roots to keep soil cooler
    • Gypsy, Sweet Banana, Shishito
  • Okra – Practically loves heat; thrives in hot, humid weather.
    • Clemson Spinless, Burgundy
  • Sweet Potatoes– Both the tubers and the edible greens handle heat easily.
    • Beauregard, Georgia Jet
  • Malabar Spinach – Not a true spinach, but it loves heat and humidity.
    • Green Stem, Malabar Red Stem
  • Melons(Cantaloupe, Watermelon) – Thrive in heat but need lots of water.

  • Yardlong Beans(also called asparagus beans) – Even more heat-loving than regular green beans, prefers hot weather
