Why do my tomatoes have tough skin?

It usually occurs due to underwatering during the fruit development. The plant does this to conserve water. High heat can cause tomatoes to have thicker skin. The plant does this to protect the fruit from sun scald. Tomatoes that are crack resistant like ‘Early Girl’ tend to have a thicker skin.
