Why are the tops of my tomatoes remaining green?

This is a physiological disorder called green shoulders. It is important not to over prune your plant, they need plenty of leaves for cover. We see this more often on heirlooms than the new hybrid varieties.

What is happening: The chlorophyll did not break down as the fruit ripened. This could have occurred because the tomato fruit itself got too much sun or extreme heat can cause the lycopene (the red color) not to form.
