What is the difference between primocanes and floricanes?

A: Primocanes are first-year canes that are typically green, flexible, and smooth or less woody in appearance. These canes primarily focus on vegetative growth, although some varieties can produce fruit during their first year.
Floricanes are second-year canes that are generally darker brown, woody, and more rigid in texture. They produce fruit during their second growing season before naturally dying back. After fruiting, these canes may appear dry, brittle, or grayish and should be removed at ground level.
Quick Tip: Look for old fruiting stems and spent flower clusters to help identify floricanes. Color alone isn't always reliable, since mature primocanes can also turn brown!
