How do you grow the direct sow tomatoes and peppers?


These varieties were bred to planted in cooler soil. Direct sown tomatoes give them a natural hardiness since they grow accustomed to outdoor conditions from the start.


Planting Instructions:


TOMATOES:


•SOW in fertile, well-worked soil approximately one week before the last possible spring frost. Sow seeds 3-4’ apart in groups of 3-4 and cover with ¼” of fine soil. Seedlings emerge in 7-10 days. Keep young plants free of weeds and pests.

•THIN to stand 1 plant per group when plants are 4” high.


Peppers

 

•SOW in fertile, well-worked soil approximately one week before the last possible spring frost. Sow seeds 3-4’ apart in groups of 4-5 and cover with ¼” of fine soil. Seedlings emerge in 10-21days. Keep young plants free of weeds and pests. 

•THIN to stand 1 plant per group when plants are 4” high.


Tips:

  • Plant seeds in groups and use a plant tag (marker) to indicate where the are planted.
  • You can cover the seeds with  1/4 inch of potting soil, so you can tell where they are planted
  • Keep soil evenly moist
  • Thin to one plant to group to keep the healthiest plants
  • Cover with a row cover if frost is expected  
  • Only the Lavaland pepper is good for container the rest are big plants and did not grow well in containers.
